Age of Empires 4 Gameplay Trailer Breakdown
The centerpiece of the Age of Empires Fan Preview Event was, naturally, its extensive gameplay trailer. For starters, the trailer showcased the four ages that the game will be set in and those are Dark, Feudal, Castle, and Imperial. The Dark age will include a lot of herding and hunting of animals. The Feudal age has stone and gold mining. The Castle age will introduce big walls and siege weapons. Finally, the Imperial age will have units that make use of gunpowder and roads can be built to connect structures.
The trailer also showcased 4 of the eight civilizations that will be playable at launch: the English, the Chinese, the Mongols, and the Delhi Sultanate. Naturally, each civilization will come with its own perks and capabilities. For instance, the Mongols, being a nomadic civ, can uproot their entire town and move it to another location.
The trailer also gave us a glimpse of new mechanics and features. Units can be assigned to specific walls and other defense structures. Enemies can mount an offense to capture ramparts and use them to launch devastating attacks. Archers can whip up quick fortifications that they can use as vantage points. The most exciting feature, however, is the new stealth forest mechanic. Units can hide in forests to mount ambushes or avoid approaching armies. The mechanic is built in such a way as to make sight limited to the point where whole armies can completely miss each other.
Finally, the trailer revealed the Norman campaign which follows Duke William of Normandy on his bid to take back control of England. The campaign will follow several of the Duke’s descendants as they continue his fight.
